Finding Ways for Families to Serve the Poor

Pete McCreary, Rich Rayburn, Steve Jordan, Andy Graham and I met last night to discuss how the families in our home school co-op can get out in the community to serve the needy families. As we looked at our nice, orderly suburban lives it seemed that most of our activities revolved around ourselves and our families. We dance, do gymnastics, go to church and the grocery store because those are things we want to do. And when we’re done, we head to our homes. One concern we had was that our children would not grow up with a balanced sense of diversity and responsibility because our kids lacked a strong interaction with a diverse group outside our churches.

So we’re going to organize some efforts that allow entire families can get involved. Whether it’s helping the elderly or packing up food for famine ravaged families in Africa, hopefully we’ll have something setup by the end of the year. I’ll keep you posted.

While it is not for your families directly Andy, I do a prison ministry if you and your fellow dads want to take a look. The family sees me going to the prison and it sets an example for them. They also help bake cookies to support the work. Let me know if you wanted to know more, I could speak to you and/or your group/church. http://www.kairosohio.org/ My work is at SOCF in Lucasville and we are always in need of volunteers.

Mark, thank you for sharing! I like this idea. Let me round up some folks and see how some of the guys I have contact with could help out and volunteer. Let’s have a conversation about this. You’re setting the pace!
